Protect Daily Deep Work Time

One boundary that's been a game-changer for me is protecting my creative time as if it were a client meeting. As a founder, it's easy to let your calendar fill up with team check-ins, client calls, or administrative work, but I realized early on that if I didn't carve out space to think, write, or just zoom out, the quality of my decisions started slipping. Now, I block two hours every morning as non-negotiable 'deep work' time. No meetings, no emails, just focused thinking. By maintaining this practice, I better ensure that I control my own schedule instead of it controlling me, and keep a better work-life balance in the process.

Set and Stick to Strict Work Hours

It has been a challenge for me to not only set boundaries for a good work/life balance but to actually stick to them. Honestly, though, it's something that I should have put more focus on early on. For me, having "work hours" and "non-work hours" has been the best boundary I've set. This means that once 4 PM comes on weekdays, I have to disconnect from work. The same thing applies for weekends - those are off-limits for work. Before setting this boundary, I was missing out on family time, and I really had no free time for hobbies or workouts. But now I have a better schedule, and I think it's helped me get more done during "work" hours and prevent burnout.

Unplug and Prioritize True Vacations

Just as I encourage my employees to unplug when the workday is done, I try to do the same. I spend as little time on my computer as possible outside of work hours, and I often set my phone to "Do Not Disturb." I also try to make the most out of any vacations I take. I try to ensure they are true vacations where I am not working at all, unless there is an emergency that requires my attention. My hope is that by setting standards like these, it encourages the rest of my team to operate in the same way, prioritizing their own work-life balance.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance as a small business owner is one of the most challenging aspects—especially in the early years when you're wearing many hats. I often felt overwhelmed trying to juggle everything in a single day.
